Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. never ceased working for civil rights and was instrumental in many nonviolent demonstrations, including the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. Well known for his eloquent and inspiring speeches, his "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered in Washington, D.C. to approximately 250,000 people, was the inspiration for the first monument honoring an African American on the National Mall. The monument features a realistic carving of Dr. King and commemorates his life-long quest to secure democracy, justice, hope, and love for all people. At the age of thirty-five, he won the Nobel Peace Prize. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.
