BACK
Nannie Helen Burroughs (1878-1961) was an educator, church leader, and civil rights activist. A well-educated woman, she held a variety of jobs and founded a number of organizations devoted to the advancement of black women. She was associate editor for The Christian Banner, a Baptist newspaper. She was also active within the National Baptist Convention, working for the Foreign Mission Board as bookkeeper and editorial secretary, and gained national recognition for her speech, "How the Sisters Are Hindered from Helping." Her greatest achievement was her National Training School for Women and Girls in Washington, D.C. Students were trained vocationally and professionally through her program of the "three Bs": the Bible, the bath, and the broom, representing a clean life, a clean body, and a clean house. Students also had to pass a course on African American history. Burroughs was the principal of the school, which is now an elementary school, until her death in 1961.
