Back:
Ella Josephine Baker (1903-1986) is highly regarded for her lifetime work as a civil rights and human rights activist. As a young girl born in the South, she was greatly influenced by her grandmother, a former slave, and developed the strong desire to fight injustice. She graduated both high school and college as valedictorian and then moved to New York, where she was instrumental in the organization of several civil rights organizations. She preferred to work behind-the-scenes, believing power should come from people not leaders. Working with some of the most notable activists of the day, Baker was active for many years in the organization and leadership of the NAACP, eventually serving as the president of the New York chapter. She also helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and later the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Throughout her life, she spoke out for women and mentored young people to carry on the fight for civil rights.
